The art of fine woodworking is based in the proper choice and use of tools. In this clas we will discuss and work hands on with both hand and power tools as we determine their specific attributes to various woodworking objectives. A wide variety of hand tools from planes to chisels, and power tools including: jig saws, skill saws sanders, band saws, jointer tables, thickness planers, radial arm saws, and stop saws will be discussed and used.

In this course we are focusing completely on one of the elemental foundations of woodworking both functionally and aesthetically - joinery work. The student will learn how to layout a mortise and tenon as well as dovetail joint. We will also discuss a variety of other attachments in different forms: spline joints, rubbed joints, screws, mechanical joints, blocking at critical joints, and much more.
Case Making: A Grandfather Clock

Does making a grandfather clock sound intimidating, too difficult, or complicated? Not so. The approach to the grandfather clock is case making. Simple and straightforward, we will guide you through the process of construction of three simple cases: the base, the pendulum cabinet, and the top case that houses the timepiece.
From there we will face frame the piece and trim it out and even show you how to make a crown molding on the table saw. Your family and friends will be amazed, but only you will know the secret. Simple and straightforward case construction. You will be able to apply what you learn in this class about case making for other projects around the house; a small library, open shelves either side of the fireplace hearth, or just open storage shelves in the garage or basement.
So make a case for the case, and leave with a grandfather clock.
Kaaterskill Chair

In this course, the student will learn how to make this two piece chair. This is an easy outdoor piece of furniture to make. The student will learn about structural elements, and plan and design as they relate to creating a functional piece. Students will complete their own elegantly functional Kaaterskill chair as finished project.

This class is offered for those who have an interest in woodworking but have little or no experience. This course focuses on hand skills from designing joinery work, scribbling the layout on a work piece, using the appropriate hand tools, to finally creating the joint. Throughout the course there will be discussions concerning timber technology and various types of joinery work, including their strengths and weaknesses. At the conclusion of the course you will leave with a fundamental understanding of basic design, layout, and joinery work...and of course...your project!
Finishing

In this two day workshop we will cover how the finishing process can take your project to a higher level, not only in appearance, but in performance as well. We will discuss the pros and cons of numerous finishes made for wood. We will also discuss how to determine which one is best for you. This class is designed to answer the questions that arise, and eliminate the frustrations that occur throughout the finishing process. We will go over, step by step, the procedures for surface preparations and how various woods accept finishes differently. We will also discuss which materials you can access at your local hardware or paint store, as well as the materials that need to be ordered through catalogs, or industrial suppliers. With the wide variety of products available, this can be a daunting part of working with wood. This class will break down a lot of those barriers. We'll cover topics like water based vs. solvent based product. B. Goode will also discuss and demonstrate techniques and methods of application (brush, wipe, or spray?), and the tools and materials for each. Another topic of discussion will be the proper health and safety issues attached to the various materials.
After taking the course, you will enjoy and look forward to the finishing process, and above all, be gratified at your results. It is not enough to build a nice piece, the finish is the icing on the cake, and that is what your eye sees first. Happy woodworking!

Veneering

In this two day veneering workshop we'll take a close look at how veneer can add a world of new design and structural possibilities to your woodworking projects. B. Goode will break down the myths, doubts and questions that surround this exotic process. We will discuss how they did it in the past and how it has evolved in the contemporary woodworking environment. We will cover shop made as well as commercially available veneers, the pros and cons of each and how to choose which is best for your application. You will have an understanding of how to make your own panels both flat and curved. You will learn about adhesives and their properties, as well as the different clamping and pressing methods used to laminate veneer. The student will leave with an understanding of not only this versatile medium but how to integrate this enjoyable process into their shop.

Woodcarving

In this two day course we will explore ways in which the age old craft of carving can be incorporated into your woodworking experience. Whether it be subtle decorative details or elaborate sculptural elements, you will be able to apply the skills and techniques that we cover to bring your vision to fruition. We will discuss how a "plain Jane" designed piece of furniture, plaque or sign can be transformed into an elegant and more interesting end result with the addition of carving. B. Goode will discuss and illustrate some methods of work. We will cover the tools and materials used in the trade. B. Goode will show you how to layout a carving project, whether it be a surface embellishment or three dimensional architectural elements. The nature of the process presents a unique set of challenges and issues. For example, how to secure and odd shaped work piece, the proper way to sit or stand while carving to minimize fatigue and maximize your safety, how to safely use hand tools, chisels, knives, rasps, files, rifflers and sandpaper. How and when to use power carving equipment, both electric and pneumatic. How to prepare a carved piece for fabrication and finish.
Whether you are curious and don't know how to start or experienced and want to expand, this course is for you. This discipline can and will give you hours of enjoyment as well as self gratification.

Just in time for a white Christmas. A present for someone special or maybe you? The focus of this class will center on steam bending. Beautiful forms can be created from steam bending. You will learn the craft by creating the runner. Then you will build and put together the frame of the toboggan. We'll give you ideas on how to put a finish on your toboggan at home. Then, it is off to the sledding hill!
